IDEP

What is the Interior Design Experience Program (IDEP)?

IDEP is a monitored, documented experience program administered by the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) for entry-level interior designers. New interior design graduates often enter the workforce without a clear roadmap for professional success. IDEP provides this roadmap for the transition between formal education and professional practice.

Why should I participate in IDEP?

IDEP provides a complete and balanced "curriculum" for your first years of work after graduation by targeting critical experience areas for the professional interior designer in any specialty area. IDEP helps prepare you for the NCIDQ Examination and licensure/registration. Plus, it builds on your professional network through supervision and mentorship.

Is IDEP required?

IDEP is optional in most jurisdictions. However, it is strongly recommended as a structured, comprehensive method for completing your entry-level work experience. Your direct supervisor and outside mentor will help you get well-rounded training in your first years of work, and you'll finish the program well-prepared for the NCIDQ Examination. You can also save money on the exam! Check with your jurisdiction to find out if IDEP is required for licensure.

How long does it take to complete IDEP?

IDEP takes approximately two to three years to complete, depending on your education level. If you work part-time, it will take longer.

How do I enroll in the program?

Begin by taking the following steps:

  • Identify your supervisor and select a mentor.
  • Download the IDEP Application, IDEP Supervisor and Mentor Agreement and IDEP Verification Form.
  • Submit all three forms, a sealed copy of your college transcript(s) and the application fee to NCIDQ. We will review your application, confirm your acceptance into the program and send instructions on how to document your hours in your IDEP Log.
  • Use your IDEP log to begin keeping records of hours worked in the IDEP competency areas.
  • Document previous acceptable work experience (up to three months before the date you submitted your application) in your IDEP log.

How much does it cost to participate?

The program costs $255 US, payable in three installments. Participants are responsible for paying all program fees. Some employers pay them as an employee benefit. (Fees shown are for 2009 only. Fees are subject to change.)

  • $85 due with application.
  • $85 due at midpoint of the program.
  • $85 due at completion of the program.

I have been working for several years since I graduated. Can I count past experience toward the IDEP requirements?

No. IDEP is a guide for earning future work experience. It cannot be used to document past experience. Once you are approved to participate in the program, you can record no more than three months of experience prior to the start date.

For example, John Doe applies to participate in IDEP and is approved on January 15, 2007. He can only document work experience starting October 15, 2006--not before.

I graduated five years ago. Can I start IDEP now?

No. IDEP is intended to assist the new graduate in his or her first few years of work. Therefore, the program is only open to individuals who start the program within two years of graduation.

For example, Jane Smith graduated with a bachelor's degree on May 15, 2006. She must apply to participate in IDEP before May 15, 2008.

Note that if you are on Eligibility Route 1, 2 or 3, you can begin IDEP before you graduate.

I am having trouble earning the minimum number of required hours in some competency areas. How can I earn these hours?

There are three ways to earn IDEP experience hours. You can gain acceptable experience by:

  • Working directly in a competency area.
  • Observing others who are engaged in such work.
  • Attending lectures, seminars and continuing education courses.
Note: these professional development activities can be used to fulfill no more than 10% of the total required hours within a competency area.
