Fact or Fiction?
Debunking Common Myths

Lightbulb
Myth: You can't mentor someone without living in the same city or state.

Fiction: Being a mentor is both easy and rewarding. Mentors who participate in our Interior Design Experience Program (IDEP) are required only to meet with the participant in person, via phone or e-mail a minimum of three times per year. You can be in a completely different city or even state and still be able to give your IDEP participant the benefit of your wisdom and guidance.

Right now, being a mentor is more important than ever. In this economy, it is easy for students and out-of-college workers just starting out in the profession to feel lost or discouraged. Having the support and ear of a person who has been in their shoes can mean the difference between success and failure in the industry. This is where you can help!

There are many great reasons to become a mentor or supervisor (someone who has detailed knowledge and direct control over an employee's work). As you bring your wealth of experience to the relationship, in turn, the mentee shares his or her knowledge of the latest design trends and technology, resulting in a cultivated relationship where you learn from each other!

You can feel good about your role in the growing professional's education and experience as you help to create a more skilled and valuable designer and potential employee.

How do you become a mentor or supervisor to someone? If you know someone who is thinking about participating in IDEP, simply ask the person if he or she would like your support! You can also contact your local association chapter(s) to learn about networking opportunities to meet young professionals looking for support.

Your offer can go a long way in both his or her professional growth and yours!

Help Your Clients Discover the Importance of Interior Design
By Lisa Whited, NCIDQ Past President

If you are reading this, then chances are you know how frustrating it is to explain what you do for a living to your own family and friends - let alone your clients! "You're an interior designer?! Oh, I love those decorating shows!"
HSW button
Now you can share an interactive floor plan that helps explain what interior design is, why it's important and how it affects the health, safety and welfare of the public.

Launched less than two months ago, NCIDQ's HSW (health, safety and welfare) portal has already received great attention. We've received excellent comments and recommendations from some of our visitors.

"I am so glad NCIDQ has this new tool," says one designer from Florida. "It's a great visual reference to use when I am explaining to my potential clients the importance of certain features in their space. Now they understand why they'd hire me -- a professional interior designer."

"This site is so helpful; it's one of the best communication vehicles I've seen," says a designer from Oregon. "Considering our audience might be legislators or other non-design professionals, one thing that would make it more helpful is more basic information such as a vertical illustration of the lever handles and a vertical illustration of 'push' and 'pull' dimensions at the doors."

We appreciate those that have taken the time to share their feedback and we encourage you to do the same. Whether you want to put a link (www.ncidq.org) to our HSW portal on your own Web site, or you want to send an e-mail to friends, family and clients to let them know what you REALLY are doing all day, please consider this an invitation to do so.

In order to make this portal beneficial to all of you, we are collecting the input you give us about the new site and will update and refine it in the coming months.

To submit your own comments or recommendations, e-mail hsw@ncidq.org. To view the site, click here.
HD Expo a Success

HDKenNCIDQ recently attended the Hospitality Design (HD) 2009 Expo in Las Vegas. The conference was well attended and NCIDQ was able to reach out to a lot of Certificate holders, people considering taking the NCIDQ Examination and consumers of interior design services.

We continue this outreach on behalf of our Certificate holders to promote the value and importance of hiring an interior designer who is qualified through education, experience and examination.

HD2 NCIDQ's Executive Director Jeffrey F. Kenney led an informative session during the Expo that covered a breadth of information about the NCIDQ Examination, including: how to qualify, apply and/or register for the exam, how to hire an NCIDQ Certificate holder, how to benefit from your NCIDQ credential and gain a competitive edge and much more. We received a lot of feedback, and we look forward to seeing you at NeoCon in Chicago.
QLetter back issues are always available on our Web site.

Sincerely,

NCIDQ
